History : 1929 saw the arrival of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II which set new standards for others to follow. It was a vehicle specifically designed with the chauffeur driven passenger in mind. At the time the only home produced rival to compare with the Phantom II was the Bentley 8 Litre, which was a faster vehicle but was thought to be far less chauffeur friendly, with considerably heavier steering and a gearbox which was more difficult to operate. The vast majority of the 1,400 or so Phantom II chassis that were produced between 1929 and 1935 were fitted with four door saloon style coachwork, ideal for a chauffeur and his passengers. However a select few were fitted with more stylish coachwork such as Chassis No 33WJ which was completed in October of 1929 and the believed to have been displayed at the Paris Salon. Its stylish coachwork was created in Paris at the works belonging to Charles Weymann, the noted creator of the fabric covered bodies largely constructed in Addlestone in Surrey, just a short drive from the legendary Brooklands racing circuit. By 1929 Chalres Weymann had added metal bodies to their range, fitted over a wooden frame witth metal joints. Chassis No 33WJ is one of just three bodies constructed in Paris by Weymann and is a unique design. It comes fitted with some very interesting features including a dickey seat in the rear deck, lockable hinged running boards, tail mounted spare wheel, two seat configuration with storage space located behind, a hatch on the nearside ideal for stowing golf clubs or hand luggage and lever operated dipping headlights. Originally owned by its creator Charles Weymann 33WJ has links slightly later in its life to the famous writer Ernest Hemmingway. It is believed to have been owned by Hemmingway although this cannot be proved beyond doubt. Chassis No 33WJ has lived in the United States of America over the past few decades until returning to the UK in recent times. This striking Phantom II is a pleasure to drive and has been prepared in our workshops as per our normal policy to allow the next fortunate owner continued motoring pleasure.
